Dukes Maths Tuition
Dukes Maths Tuition

Welcome
My name is Rod and I operate as a full-time maths tutor through Dukes Maths Tuition. I specialise in providing bespoke, high quality GCSE and KS3 maths tuition with a focus on achieving outstanding results. I teach both online and from my home on Dukes Avenue, Muswell Hill.
About me
I trained as a maths teacher in 2012 at the University of Warwick, after leaving my city job as a Chartered Accountant (fully qualified ICAEW), to seek a more rewarding career. I have worked in three very different, but equally excellent, London schools and have, more recently, been the Head of Maths at a high performing North London secondary academy, where a led the maths faculty to record results over a period of six years.
After deciding against a move into school leadership, but seeking a new challenge and a better work life balance following the birth of our second child, I decided to create Dukes Maths Tuition. Not an agency, just me and the ambition to become the most trusted maths tutor in the area through exceptional teaching, clear communication with parents and most importantly, exceptional outcomes for learners.
Experience and success
My 2024 GCSE class achieved a progress score of +1.4 (on average students achieved 1.4 grades higher than expected, based on their SATS results in Year 6). Average national progress is zero and a score of +1.4 is comfortably top 1% nationally. As a department we achieved a progress score of +0.6. I have a track record of achieving outstanding results with all levels of maths ability and from set 1s to small 'nurture' classes. In 2017, the very first year of the new 9-1 GCSE, my class achieved 17 grade 9s.

I have an expert knowledge of the GCSE maths syllabus and know exactly how to prepare students to maximise their grades. My sessions are carefully planned to build confidence and understanding over time. I have vast experience in maths curricula design and create tailored schemes of learning for each student, according to their individual needs.

I particularly enjoy giving confidence to students who would not consider maths their strongest or most enjoyable subject. I gain great satisfaction from seeing these students achieve the grades they need for their next steps and most importantly removing the 'fear of maths' that many young (and older) people experience. I am unashamedly exam focussed and slightly results obsessed. I teach no more and no less than what is needed to nail that exam!
My teaching style
My approach is exam and results focused, whilst adapting to individual needs and building confidence and resilience in problem solving. My extensive understanding of the GCSE syllabus, common student misconceptions, the most effective way of communicating key concepts and directing independent students ensures rapid progression in confidence, understanding and grades. I teach no more and no less than what is required to achieve exam success, whether a student is targeted a grade 9 or a grade 4. I work closely with parents and provide honest feedback on their child's current working grade and progress.
Online tuition is very popular and I have an extremely effective method of online delivery. Alternatively, tutoring can take place at your house if reasonably local to Muswell Hill (travel time will be factored into price) or, more commonly, at my house on Dukes Avenue (we may at times be interrupted by a toddler or a cat).

I encourage a no commitment, initial meeting with student and parent to discuss requirements and for all parties to decide upon the best approach. I am 100% committed to ensuring that every one of my private students exceeds expectations.
